If you want to play guitar and write songs that you need to know something, at least, on the theory of guitar music. It could break the guitar theory to the study of three elements: chords, scales and arpeggios.

Scales easy for some people, but others find them difficult to learn and difficult to understand. You can actually refer to the ways of the scales of chords. It does not really matter what your level of musicianship is. What matters is how to define the goals as a guitarist.
