You are not alone here, this is the most common problem encountered by most of the guitarists worldwide. And I was no different either. But the biggest question remains, how do you get around this problem? That’s what I am going to explain to you in this article.

Let me ask you something, have you gone through this situation before?….You heard a melodious lead by your favorite guitarist or band which sounded quite simple, but when you attempted it, you found it to be too difficult to learn, and then you got frustrated and gave it up? huh Sounds familiar? And do you think this happens only to you?

No, there are millions of aspiring guitarists like you who go through this same situation everyday and ultimately give up learning guitar altogether. Sad. I feel sorry for them. So please don’t let that happen to you. In order to get around this problem I have explained some easy practice tips that you can try out which has given me great results. So here you go

1. Always take care that you start learning a new riff or lead when you have a pleasant and happy mood. But I would say, you must always carry a positive attitude to enjoy life.

2. Choose a piece of solo that you think you can easily learn. Because if you take a tough one, you might find it too difficult to learn and then chances are that you might leave it mid-way. Remember to go step by step. You can definitely play it later on.

3. Practice it slowly. If you hurry or try to speed things up, you wouldn’t have perfection and won’t sound good to you or others. But If you practice it slowly, you will develop finger strength, dexterity and you will be able to internalize the notes and their positions on the fret board in your mind.

4. Metronome – I will recommend you to use a metronome or any other device that gives out beats in the speeds that you can control, so that you can play along with it. This way you can gradually develop speed in your leads. Now almost all the guitar courses provide you with a metronome and other useful tools to make your guitar learning easy and fun filled.

5. Practicing scales – This is a great way to play killer riffs. Take any scale, pentatonic minor or harmonic minor and play it in different styles up and down the fret board, in different octaves, using various picking styles. This will immensely develop speed and strength of your fingers. And when you play a scale try to utilize the entire fret board, rather than sticking to one or two positions.

I guarantee you that if you follow these patterns that I just explained, you will be able to play the most intricate of the solos that you might encounter, with ease and perfection.

By the way I want to ask you something, are you teaching yourself from random lessons or taking lessons from an expensive guitar tutor? Either ways you are doing harm to yourself. Nothing can be more dangerous than learning from random unauthorized lessons that you find everywhere on the internet.

And let me ask you, why should you waste your hard earned money on expensive private tutors when you can get years worth of lessons for the price of just a single session, taught by more than one or two professional tutors?

Since I have done the same mistakes myself and suffered a lot for it, It was my duty to warn you about them and also inform you about a better alternative. Anyways, do follow my practice tips, it will take you a long way.

Learn Guitar Riffs

If you ask anyone what musical instrument they wish they could play, what do you think the answer would be more than half of the time? Well if you haven t thought it yet, the answer is the guitar. For some reason the guitar has become a really noted musical instrument amongst all irrespective of the age or the gender or the fact whether it s an acoustic or an electric guitar. This article is going to be about one of the best things the guitar players like to do whether they are amateurs or professionals, and that is play guitar riffs.

Guitar riffs are a short series of chords, and these guitar riffs can be a particular part from a song or were specifically designed to be played as riffs solely. The many popular of these guitar riffs are the ones that were produced during the decades of 70 s, 80 s, and the 90 s.

The importance of these guitar riffs are established on diverse factors; One of the primary factors is that they are used to train the novices; guitar riffs are also ordinarily played by skilled guitar players just for the fun of it. Playing guitar riffs can also be very useful to players who have been out of touch for a while, as they would make the player concentrate on views such as finger positioning and replacement.

Another one of the causes for the popularity of riffs among guitar players is that there are riffs designed for acoustic guitars just as there are for electric guitars, and there are even riffs for bass players as well; no matter to what it is related to, each player has a riff to play with the guitar.

Guitar riffs also come in very handy if you are somebody who gets tempted into playing the guitar many of the time you see one, but you don t have time. Since riffs are short you could speedily finish playing one within about half a minute and move on with your other work; you d be astonished to know the number of people who does that.

some guitar riffs are available on the cyberspace for free, but many of them aren t and require you to pay for them. There also books of riffs and some of the good ones have a quite number of riffs in them. These books are chiefly designed for beginners. Therefore the riffs are ordered in such a way that the trouble increases as you move along, so if you are looking for a riff that is a bit thrilling, then you should pick from the middle or the end of the list of riffs.

There are 5 important and key things that you must know as a guitarist. If you know these five things then almost 50 percent of your job is done. But I am not saying that you have to restrict your knowledge only to these five things. To excel as a musician or as a guitarist you must constantly keep learning new things and go deeper into it, coupled with hours of practice and who lot of patience and determination. If you abide by these rules, you will surely become a guitar pro, I can guarantee you that.

Lets look at the 5 key things that you must know as a guitar player,

1.Names of the strings
2.Learn all notes from E to e
3.Musical Intervals
4.Understanding and Learning scales
5.Understanding and Building chords

Names of strings – The first and foremost thing that you should know about guitar are the names of the strings. A guitar has 6 strings( and a fret board with 21 to 22 frets) and is denoted by the notes E-B-G-D-A-e in standard tuning. The first and last strings(E and e) are the same, except they are in different pitches (or octaves). The strings are counted from bottom-up i.e. e-A-D-G-B-E, starting from the higher ‘e’. The entire six strings are spanned over 2 octaves. You will come to know how, in the next section.

A standard 6 stringed guitar can be tuned in different ways. A popular tuning method used by rock musicians is Drop-D method, where the sixth string or the bass string (E) is lowered to the note ‘D’. That will be a whole step lower.

Learn all notes from E to e – Learning the notes from 1st to the 6th string are very important. In the previous section we learned the names of the 6 strings. Those were the open string names or without pressing any fret. Now we will learn the connecting notes from E to e. So if I list out all the notes from E to e, they will be

E(open)-F(1)-G(3) – on the 6th string where the notes F and G are produced by pressing the 1st and 3rd frets. So similarly the other notes on the rest of the strings would be as follows,

5th String – A(open)-B(2)-C(3)
4th String – D(open)-E(2)-F(3)
3rd String – G(open)-A(2)
2nd String – B(open)-C(1)-D(3)
1st String – e(open)-F(1)-G(3)

Now we have all the notes from strings E to e and they are E-F-G-A-B-C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D-e, spanning over 2 octaves. An octave is nothing but a group 8 notes where the starting note(or Tonic note) and last note will be the same, except in a different pitch. So If we start from the sixth string E, then an octave would cover E-F-G-A-B-C-D-E that will stop at the 2nd fret on the 4th string(D).

Musical Intervals – Two of the basic intervals that you need to know are a Whole tone(or Whole step or Full tone) and Half tone( or Semi tone or Half step).

• Full Tone or Whole Step – Examples of full tone or whole step would be F to G on the 6th string, C to D on 2nd string and again F to G on 1st string, G(open) to A on 2nd string. That is there will be an interval of a fret or a tone in-between the two notes. In case of a piano, the musical intervals between all white keys are a whole step.(see the previous sections)

• Half Tone or Half Step – Example of half step is E to F on the 4th string and B to C on 5th string. In a half step interval you just play the note semi-tone higher or lower or you play the next fret or a fret below instead of playing the alternate frets or notes.(see the previous sections)

Understanding and Learning Major Scales – Scales are nothing but a group of notes that will be used through out an entire composition and it can define the genre of the music. Here I will show you the most basic diatonic scale, C Major.

The notes of a C Major scale are quite simple C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C. These are exactly the same notes starting from C on the 5th string to the C on the 2nd string. This is the first scale that every musician starts with. And the intervals between each note in this scale are

Whole-Whole-Half-Whole-Whole-Whole-Half

And this is exactly the formula for building a Major scale.

Understanding and Building Major Chords – If you know how to build a scale, you can easily build chords from it. For building a Major chord you need to start from the root note(first note) of the major scale and build a major third, which is two whole tones above the root(in this case C) and then add a perfect fifth note(fifth note in the scale) to it.

So if we have to build a C Major chord, then the notes of the chords would be C-E-G. Where C(root note) to E is a Major third and G is a perfect fifth. A perfect fifth is nothing but the fifth note on C Major scale or the fifth degree.

The related chords of a scale are Tonic i.e. the first note or degree, sub-dominant, the fourth note and dominant the fifth note. So in case of C Major scale we will derive the chords C,F and G7th.

Now since you have got the major things out of the way, you can check out these interesting guitar lessons that I have compiled for you from various sources. Hope you will find them interesting.

Methods To Learn Guitar Licks Of Rock Songs?

If you try to understand and apply these tips, it will be lot easier for you to learn any lead riff or lick or rhythm pattern of your favorite artist and then replicate it on your guitar.

A general tip is that, you should always start practicing the songs slowly, especially if it is a fast song and then gradually increase the speed and try to match up with the song speed. This will not only improve the dexterity and strength of your left and right fingers but also will help you play any song with perfection.

If you are looking out for learning a song from a heavy metal band with difficult lead segments then I would suggest you learn the shredding methods. Shredding consists of a set of playing styles that is used in different combination in a song. Usually you will find shredding widely being used in Rock n’ roll, Heavy Metal and blues. It includes different types of picking, tapping, arpeggios etc.

Now I will give you a brief understanding of different methods to learn to play songs on your guitar.

They are,
* Tabs
* Learning by hearing

Tabs – Tabs is the most popular method used for learning songs. You can either buy them from a musical store or you can find thousands of them on the internet. But the ones you get from an authentic guitar course or musical store will be more perfect than the amateur ones that you find on the internet. Tabs usually provide you the notes and also show you how to play them, by representing the fret and position on your guitar. And It will contain both the rhythm part and lead segment, mostly printed on the same page.
If you are completely new to tabs, then there is a certain level of learning associated with it. In order to make things easier, I would highly recommend you to first learn the musical theory and the standard musical notations and then couple them with the tabs..

Learning by hearing – You can also learn a song by listening to it from a record or from your tutor or from a concert video. Though learning by ear might sound hard a bit hard, it is a lot easier to do it. But for making things really easier it is very much recommended to know the scale and music theory in general i.e. musical notations and tabs, how to read them and most importantly to build scales and chords. Since chords are built from various degrees or notes on a scale, you must know how to build scales first. If you know these basic things, learning by ear is just a walk in the park.
Scale or Chord Theory – I will quickly introduce you to one of the basic scales in music and will show you how chords are derived from it.

So let’s take the most basic diatonic scale – C Major. The notes in this scale are

C – 1st note – Tonic
D – 2nd note – Supertonic
E – 3rd note – Mediant
F – 4th note – Subdominant
G – 5th note – Dominant
A – 6th note – Relative minor
B – 7th note – Leading note
C – 8th note – Octave

The chord progression of a typical song is usually built from the Tonic, Sub-dominant and the Dominant notes of a scale. So if we apply the same chord progression on the above scale we will have the chords C Major, F Major and G major chords respectively. But there is no strict rule as such and you can surely use any combination of degrees in that scale to build a chord progression.
