I don’t need the amp to sound spectacular, just give my acoustic guitar a little kick, so I wasn’t expecting it to sound amazing. It’s a small 5″ by 6″ box, for Pete’s sake. I was very pleased with this amp, which, for the low price, features (headphone jack, power adaptor, three knobs), and loudness seems like one of the smarter choices when considering mini amps. It didn’t smell like bacon out of the box, but it has a nice, clean tone and is a very cute little amp. This is the kind of amp you’d find a half-crazy person playing through on the side of the road in the deep South, as in Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus. Johnson is not a well-known name like Fender or Marshall, but Johnson has made a smart little amp. The volume alone (which, amusingly, goes to 12) isn’t very powerful — you get the volume by upping the tone and drive knobs. It was a little risky buying an amp online without benefit of hearing it, but it was fantastic to avoid the music store, which can be an iffy experience in itself. I’m really happy with this amp and would recommend it. I withheld a full 5 stars because it would have been nice for this amp to have a pocket clip and been made of wood rather than plastic, but other than that this is a good little amp. I would actually go up to 4 stars for this amp.

I’ve owned most of the mini-amps available over the years because I travel with my Pro-Series Traveler guitar a lot. The Johnson Mini is by far the best that I’ve seen for hotel room playing. I’ve had it for 5+ years and have never had a problem with it.
