A Simple Checklist For Learning The Guitar
If you’re like most people, you always wanted to play an instrument. And since the guitar, or its cousin the f-style mandolin is such a versatile and enjoyable musical instrument, it’s probably top on your list. Have you ever watched a good guitar player at a concert or on TV, and wished you could do even a fraction of what they were capable of?
If you are finally ready to make your guitar-playing dreams a reality, read on.
Step One – get a guitar
You can’t learn without an instrument to practice on. Obvious, right?
It’s probably best to start with an acoustic guitar, since you can play virtually any style of music with it, and it won’t hide your flaws or compensate for your lack of ability. You’ll be able to honestly assess your ability (or lack thereof) with an acoustic guitar; the same can’t be said of an electric axe. If you like folk music, traditional music, or want to try your hand at something different, a good mandolin might suit you better. But why limit yourself, try both musical instruments!
Step Two – Find a good guitar course or video
Yes, you can hire a teacher to show you how to play the guitar. But this involved considerable expense, not to mention a serious commitment.
A better option is to find an online guitar course or a set of DVD lessons. This way, you can play and practice when you have time, and set it on the back burner when you are busy or otherwise distracted.
Why sacrifice convenience, privacy, and ease of use when you can get top-notch lessons online? This way, you won’t have any excuses to quit. At worst, you’ll just postpone your learning until another day.
Step Three – Get some chords memorized
The primary thing you want to learn on the guitar is a good, basic set of chords and the chord changes associated with them. Before you start trying to tackle complicated melodies and riffs, you have to have a complete understanding of the basic chords.
But it’s not all tedium and boredom. The good news is that once you learn a basic set of chords, you’ll be well on your way to improvisation and making up your own songs and melodies.
Step Four – Learn some advanced moves
When you can effortlessly move through the basic chord changes, it’s time to mix it up a bit. You are now ready for some advanced techniques.
Many different styles of playing exist. Some concentrate on the fingering, and others are left-hand techniques involving either the flat pick, or fingerpicking. Whatever you decide to focus on, there is a style of music that’s well suited to your individual taste.
So, take these steps in order and remember to work at your own pace. You’ll have a lifetime of enjoyment when you learn to play an instrument like the guitar or mandolin, so what are you waiting for?
